Ultralight, Ultrastrong
You have never seen a pack or bag made this way... with a full-width Velcro "shark jaw" opening allowing large items to be easily packed and removed. At a weight of only 3 ounces (VX-02) you have a rainproof bag with 1000 cubic inch capacity that will never blow a seam. Ordinary stuffsacks at this capacity weigh 6-8 ounces. The full length Velcro opening allows big pieces of gear to be easily packed and unpacked plus easy access to any small piece of gear. The two side-release buckles make it easy to pull the Velcro open and to overstuff the Cylinder and get it sealed quickly again, faster than a normal compression stuff sack or dry bag. Ultrastrong seams never blow out. Ultralight packs have gotten a reputation for frequent failures. You may poke a hole in a Cylinder, but no LuxuryLite® cylinder has ever blown out and dumped gear on the trail. (For bushwacking treks, buy the 400d Cylinders because the VX-02 fabric will get scrapes and small holes in it when hiking off trail).
Capacity
The LuxuryLite® Cylinders hold a lot more than you might expect. An advanced ultralight hiker can easily fit all gear and food for a week in two Medium Cylinders and one Small Cylinder. The full-width Velcro opening makes it easy to get big items in and out. A Thermarest can be folded (not rolled) to fit easily in the Medium Cylinder with lots of room left for a tent. A Large Cylinder will hold the Garcia, Bear Vault, or Bearikade Weekender food canister.
Construction
All seams are taped before sewing with sailmakers seam tape and then sewn with heavy duty thread. The 'barrel-end' seams have no exposed fabric edges to fray and have three layers of fabric and two layers of seam tape, making the strongest possible seam for bag construction. The Velcro loops for attaching the cylinder to the frame utilize a belt loop that allows the cylinder to be used as a fanny pack. The opening is full-width allowing large or long items to fit in easily. The Velcro closure never fails like zippers do. Two side-release buckles keep the Velcro stuck and provide a place to hang socks, towels, etc. Or you can make a tote bag or duffle by looping a belt or strap behind the two side-release buckles.
Rain
The cylinders will not leak water while hiking in the rain or if the pack is standing up on the ground. The barrel-end seams are inherently water resistant since no needle holes penetrate the interior of the cylinder. Seams and bartacks that can leak into the interior are seam-sealed inside. All fabrics used are inherently waterproof. We recommend that you spray the seams with water repellant when you receive the pack and every six months. The Velcro closure sheds water like a roof shingle. You can float the pack across a lake on the frame side and it will not leak. Fuel or water that may leak out from your containers will not get on gear in the other cylinders.
Carry-on Luggage
Selecting three Small or Medium Cylinders will make a pack that meets US airline carry-on luggage size rules. Selecting two Mediums and a Large allows you to remove the Large cylinder before boarding and call it your purse/briefcase. So you can carry on the Large cylinder AND the frame with two Medium cylinders which will meet international carry on size rules. Carry one or more empty Large cylinders rolled up for more room on the walking sections of your adventure travel.
Fabrics
The Shadow Gray and Green cylinders use Dimension-Polyant VX-02 X-Ply laminated fabric, the lighest weight fabric we sell. With a little care, this fabric can last the entire Appalachian Trail. But it is easy to puncture with barbed wire, cactus, or thorns; just like ultralite tents or raingear. The 400d cylinders are made from 400 denier polyurethane coated nylon oxford fabric, ideal for extreme users like hunters, military, or canyoneering. A set of three cylinders is about 6 ounces heavier than the ultralight VX-02 cylinders, but can be abused and not get any holes. The Silver Ripstop cylinders are made from a roller coated (not spray coated) ripstop nylon and have a very quality feel compared to silnylon and will not attract dirt.
